about

"Ocean of Sound" finds Whale of Noise's Mark Taylor in a more consistently melodic mood than his previous Whale of Noise release. From the field recording of ocean sound and fog horn that begins "Foggy Day on the Coast of Maine" to the string quartet piece "Elegy (for Bailey Doogan)", "Ocean of Sound" uses traditional acoustic sounds mixed with analog and software synthesizers to create instrumental pieces that live in the space between ambient and indie music.

"A Message from the Past" is a suite of short pieces that build and reflect on one another. It begins with a glitchy sounding tune that was recorded at Jack White's Third Man Store in Nashville in "a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine that can record up to two minutes of audio and press it onto 6-inch phonograph discs." The subsequent pieces were stitched together in the studio.

"A Positron is an Electron Traveling Backwards in Time" is a collaboration between Whale of Noise and L.A. artist Die Gausser (Chris Wagganer).

"A Distant Party" got its start from a field recording of metal-o-phones played at A Gathering Place, a riverside park in Tulsa, OK.

"Elegy" is a string quartet for dear friend, the painter Bailey Doogan, who passed away in 2022. The strings were played on an iPad and arranged and edited in Reason.

The "Elegy Variation" was created by submitting the string quartet audio to an A.I. that translated it into midi notes. Midi is a musical protocol that uses data to signify musical notes and their expression. The midi data from the A.I. was imported into Reason and the notes sent to a piano, kalimba and cello instead of the string instruments. The A.I. translation isn't perfect and you can hear those idiosyncrasies as part of the piece.

"Ocean of Sound" is the first of a planned trilogy of recordings exploring different genres of music. An album of experimental music and an album of guitar-based pieces are in the works.
